Fish Oil : Stop Voluntarily Poisoning Your Body

By Jayton Miller

Besides the fact that fish oil supplements have been shown to be ineffective for most of the reasons they are taken, they can also be harmful. Let’s take a look at how this multi-billion dollar industry is fighting against you...

Fish oil is high in polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega 3’s and omega 6’s) that easily go rancid when they are exposed to light or heat. Most (if not all) fish oil supplements on the market are rancid before they get to the consumer. This means that most of the fish oil that is being sold to consumers is full of harmful byproducts that can lead to an array of adverse health effects.

The Reasons Behind This Myth:

The Reason

Where did the fish oil fad come from? Well for starters it came from the idea that the polyunsaturated fatty acids omega 3 and omega 6 are “essential” for human health. For an in depth explanation on why this is not the case, and why polyunsaturated fats are actually fighting against the optimal health of your body read our article The Nonessential, “Essential” Fatty Acids.

Nonetheless, Fish oil is still touted as a healthy supplement. Instead of questioning whether or not fish oil is actually beneficial to health, doctors have just passed down this common idea throughout the decades not realizing the detrimental effects that it can have on human health. This is very similar to the idea of cholesterol, which is actually beneficial contrary to the mainstream ideas.

Why Fish Oil Is Hurting Your Health:

Fish Oil: Hurting Your Health

Fish oil is made up of almost purely polyunsaturated fatty acids. This is ideal for fish that live in a cold environment and need a type of fat that is liquid at low temperatures in order to survive. If cold water fish had saturated fat then they would stiffen up and sink down to the bottom of the ocean, river, or lake they live in.

This means that the fat is only stable at low temperatures. When exposed to any kind of higher temperatures, or in the presence of light, the fats become oxidized. This oxidation produces free radicals that wreak havoc on the sensitive tissue in the human body, especially the reproductive organs, thyroid, and the brain.

Obviously this means that cooking with them is out of the question, but what about the famous fish oil supplements? The ones that are supposed to help with joint pain by lubricating your joints and help to decrease inflammation?

This is a complete fallacy. During the manufacturing process the fish oils are exposed to both heat and light causing them to become oxidized. This leads to the impossibility of finding a fish oil supplement that is not oxidized and does not contain free radicals. Supplementing with these leads to inflammation in the human body and causes even more joint, tissue, and brain damage.

“What if I was able to find a fish oil supplement that was not oxidized and extracted properly and makes it all the way from the fish to me in one piece?”

With the likelihood of this being very slim, once you consume the fish oil, it does the exact same thing that it would in the manufacturing and storing process. The human body is relatively high ini temperature compared to the temperature fish oil is stable at and the fish oil oxidizes in the presence of that heat that is produced by the human body. This is called auto oxidation, which is the automatic oxidation of fish oil when ingested.

With all of this said there is more that could be covered in the realm of heavy metal toxicity with the high amounts of mercury found within fish oil, but we will leave that for another time.

What Fish Oil Supplementation Actually Does:

what fish oil does

So, as we can see, fish oil supplementation is not safe due to the instability of the polyunsaturated fatty acids and other factors. So what does this actually do to the body?

Fish oil, with its high amount of omega 3’s and omega 6’s, can actually impair lifespan, leading to a shorter life. The effect of this comes from a multitude of factors that are correlated with fish oil supplementation, such as the fact that subjects who supplemented these fatty acids were shown to have 50% higher stress hormones in the body.

Nearly every claim that has been made for the benefits of fish oil supplementation has been shown to have the opposite effect on the health of study subjects:

The list can go on and on. Fish oil supplementation, and the ingestion of polyunsaturated fatty acids in general, is extremely detrimental to your health. IIf there is one recommendation that I could make to you that would rapidly change the course of your health it would be to avoid polyunsaturated fatty acids like they are the plague.

How To Fight The Harmful Effects Of Fish Oil And Pufas:

How to fight the damage

So, we now know that fish oil, and polyunsaturated fats in general, are extremely harmful. What do we do if we have been supplementing with fish oil, or have been eating large amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids?

1.Supplement With vitamin E

Vitamin E has been shown to help prevent the oxidation of pufas when they are ingested. Ensuring that you get enough of this critical vitamin, which is already consumed at a level way below what it should be, will help prevent further oxidation. This also doesn’t include the other benefits vitamin E has to offer.

2. Supplement With Aspirin

Aspirin, also known as salicylic acid, has been shown to have a protective effect on the mitochondria. This can in turn help with the healing of the mitochondria that have been exposed to pufas.

3. Lose Some Weight

If you are overweight, then you most likely have an excess amount of pufa stored in your fat tissues. Losing this excess weight, while using the steps above, can make a huge difference for the potential for those fats to cause harm.
