The inside of the ear is classically known as the middle ear. It is an air filled cavity that contains many structures that are responsible for the transmission of sound waves into the inner ear to be interpreted as sound. The structures included in the middle ear are::

  • Tympanic Membrane - The eardrum
  • Malleus - First ossicle attached to the inner part of the eardrum
  • Incus - Middle ossicle that attaches to the malleus and the stapes
  • Stapes - The third ossicle furthest inside the ear that is connected to oval window of the inner ear.
  • Fenestra Cochlea - An opening in the bone that separates the middle and inner ear covered by a secondary eardrum.
  • Auditory/Eustachian Tube - A bony and cartilaginous tube that connecting the middle ear to the throat.
  • Cochlea - Is where the receptors for hearing are located.

There are also two small muscles located in this area that help with the movement of the bones in the inner ear, the tensor tympani and the stapedius.

The inner ear is susceptible to infection via the eustachian tube. The eustachian tube is what connects the throat to the inner ear. This passageway is a route for possible infectants to get into the ear. If these infections are left untreated they can either travel up and start to effect the membranes of the brain or travel down and could possibly effect the bulb of the internal jugular vein.

If you suspect that you have an ear infection it is best to seek medical advice for it as soon as possible to avoid the potential for the infection to get much worse.
